EXPLORER MILES: EARN UP TO £1000 TOWARDS THE COST OF YOUR EXPEDITION

EXPLORER MILES: FUND-RAISE WHILST MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Since Scott first went to the Antarctic, every explorer will tell you that the planning and funding of an expedition is a crucial part of the experience – and it takes a lot longer than the expedition itself.  We want the ‘lead-up’ to your expedition to be as rewarding, and as memorable, as possible. We think we have come up with the best possible way for you to start your journey, boost your fundraising and maximise your journey to expedition.

Earn your way to the Peruvian Amazon, The Indian Himalayas or the Canadian Yukon. For the first time British Exploring is teaming up with vInspired to offer our explorers a new way to fund their expedition through social action. Social action is about doing something practical that makes a positive change. This could be volunteering, fundraising, campaigning, setting up a social enterprise or any action that has a positive impact on both yourself and other people.

Taking part in Social Action is one of the most rewarding ways to give back to society, whether you’re helping individuals, your local community or beyond.

EXPLORER MILES: SO HOW DOES IT WORK?

We have teamed up with vInspired to make earning your Explorer Miles as easy as possible - follow the steps below and start crediting your expedition account immediately.

1: Create your account on vInspired (www.vinspired.com).

2: Enter your postcode to find volunteering opportunities local to you or create your own volunteering or social action project.

3: Sign up for an opportunity and start logging your hours (for full terms and conditions click here).

If you already volunteer or have a project that does not appear on the vInspired website you can still credit your hours and earn Explorer Miles. Simply select the “Add Volunteering” button and enter the details of your social action project.

We will give out the Explorer Miles like this:

10 Hours = 100 Explorer Miles = v10 badge = £100 off your expedition cost

30 Hours = 300 Explorer Miles = v30 badge = £300 off your expedition cost

50 Hours = 500 Explorer Miles = v50 badge = £500 off your expedition cost

100 Hours = 1000 Explorer Miles = v100 badge = £1000 off your expedition cost

All hours are validated by the organisation for which you volunteer and by British Exploring.

MAKE YOUR MILES GO FURTHER?

The Explorer Miles scheme is the perfect opportunity for you to approach local businesses for match funding. Match Funding is when a business or organisation offers to match (or part match) your fundraising efforts with a donation.

You are giving local businesses double benefit for their donation. Not only are they supporting your local social action project but they also help fund your personal development through your British Exploring expedition. When you sign up for an expedition we will send you a template letter explaining the project so you can write to as many local businesses as possible. Here are a few tips to make sure your project gets in front of the right person:

  • Personalise the template. Add details about you, the social action project you are working on, why it is important to you. Also give details about why you have chosen your expedition.
  • Find out who makes the decisions and address the letter to them. Go in person if possible and ask to speak to the person to whom you are addressing the letter.
  • If you are contacting by email then try and get the personal email address or department address - try not to email info@ or help@ - these sorts of email addresses receive 1000’s of emails and the chances of your email being read by the right person is slim.
  • Promise (and deliver) news or updates on your project and expedition. Let them know you will mention their support online.
  • Let the the British Exploring office know about your social action and supporters – we will also thank people on your behalf.

WHO IS SUPPORTING THE EXPLORER MILES?

  •  #Iwill is a national campaign supported by HRH The Prince of Wales that aims to make social action a part of life for as many 10-20 years old's as possible
  • A wide range of Trusts and individuals contribute to The Explorer Miles fund. They all believe in the combined power of social action and exploration to offer transformational experiences to young people. Have a look at our supporters page to see more information about these fantastic people and organisations.
  • We are always on the look out for additional supporters to help us grow the fund and broaden the impact we can have. Please do not hesitate to get in touch if you can help - all donations large or small are greatly appreciated

WHO WILL RECOGNISE YOUR SOCIAL ACTION PROJECT?

PETER BULL - HSBC

"As an employer, I'm always keen to look for things in people outside the ordinary. Exam results are important of course, but we're also looking for other skills and other attributes. If somebody has volunteering on their CV, they are more likely to be attractive to potential employers."

NIGEL TROOD, CEO @ REDBULL

"We believe young people, if supported, can realise their dreams and make a positive contribution to society and volunteering is the perfect way to make this happen. Never has this been more important than now with unemployment soaring especially for the young population."

KATE EDWARDS - ABBEYFIELD SOCIETY

“In a competitive job market, prospective employers want to see what makes you different from all the other candidates, and volunteering is a great way of standing out from the crowd. By demonstrating that you take part in meaningful activities in your spare time, you will show an employer that you are a well-rounded person with some interesting life experience.”

Being a Youth Adventure Trust volunteer has been an incredibly rewarding experience. I've learnt new skills, met like-minded people and been lucky enough to spend time in beautiful parts of the UK, partaking in activities I would never have had the chance to do otherwise. There is a real sense in achievement in seeing a group of young people develop and grow over the camp, and pride in knowing that in some small way, I've contributed to giving these young people an invaluable experience. Looking back on it now I realise I've grown in unexpected ways too. . I wholeheartedly recommend volunteering to anyone and can't think of a better way to dedicate my time.
