British Exploring Society has made a pledge with the #iwill campaign from Step Up To Serve. #iwill is a national campaign that aims to make social action part of life for as many young people as possible by the year 2020. Through collaboration and partnership it is spreading the word about the benefits of youth social action, working to embed it in the journey of young people and creating fresh opportunities for the participation.

At British Exploring Society we believe the journey to expedition is as important at the expedition itself. Our Explorer Miles Social Action project give our explorers the opportunity to support a local cause that they are passionate about whilst fundraising for their expedition.

Our Pledge:

  • Encourage all its young explorers to actively participate in social action projects through our Explorer Miles programme. Explorers will be able to reduce the cost of their expeditions by contributing to social action in their local area and gain accreditation through the vInspired platform. British Exploring hopes to encourage over 200 young people every year to engage in over 50 hours of social action per person. We aim to grow this figure by 50 explorers a year.
  • Actively promote Social Action as a method of making its expeditions more accessible to all young people aged 18-25. Through the Explorer Miles programme we hope to engage with more explorers than ever before and encourage them to fund all or part of their expedition through social action.
  • Raise the profile of social action and the #iwill campaign, including when on speaking platforms and through social media.
  • Where young explorers make an exceptional contribution through social action, we will nominate them as #iwill ambassadors to shine a light on their fantastic contributions.

What are we doing to make this happen?

Step 1:   Explorer Miles was launched on the 7th June 2016 to coincide with National Volunteers Week.

Step 2:   Our campaign is supported by Step Up To Serve, vInspired, and our amazing network of funders and supporters.

Step 3:   Shout about it! We want to make as many people as possible aware of Explorer Miles. We want to make our expeditions as accessible as possible - and we want everyone of our explorers to take part in at least 1 social action project.
