UK Expedition to Dartmoor | Overseas Expedition to Saimaa Lakes, Finland

A rare chance to experience a true adventure in an amazing location. Landmark is a new expedition programme that takes British Exploring Society’s unique approach, based around Adventure, Knowledge and Personal Development, to the beautiful, vast moorland of Dartmoor, with the expectation that 12 Young Explorers from the UK phase will have the opportunity to go on the overseas expedition in the Saimaa Lakes, Finland.

This is an exclusive opportunity for young people involved in Power2 services to experience the vast diversity of Dartmoor and explore the large natural forests and the wide waters of the Saimaa Lakes in Finland.

UK expedition

Overseas Expedition

Dates: 10th August – 31st August
Location: Saimaa Lakes, Finland
Age Range: 16 – 21 years
Eligibility: Open to young people engaged with a Power2 service with a referral from your Key Worker
Expedition Cost: Full funded

How do I get involved

Eligibility: If you are engaged with a Power2 service and have a referral from a Key Worker you will be eligible to take part in the expedition. You will also need to have a passport which is in date for the duration of the overseas expedition.

Selection: Whilst the UK Expedition will offer opportunities for personal development. It will also be used as an opportunity to prepare you for the overseas expedition. It is expected that the UK Expedition will start with approximately 24 Explorers, with 12 being invited to join the overseas expedition.

Applications: Apply via Power2. Your Key Worker will need to submit a referral form to support and complete your application. 

What's involved

There are many reasons to take part in the expedition:

• Challenge yourself physically and mentally to try something new
• Meet new people from all over the country and make friends for life

• Learn how to live in the outdoors, camping in the wild using Trangia stoves
• Increase your confidence, communication skills and develop leadership skills whilst working as part of a team

Who are Power2?

Power2 unleash the power of children and young people to improve their lives and the lives of others through mutually beneficial relationships.

Their programmes develop crucial life skills, improve confidence and boost self-esteem.
Power2 target young people at key transition points so they can maximise their learning experiences. They look beyond the problems young people face, and towards their potential. Power2 nurture the assets, talents, resources and abilities all young people possess.

What is provided?

• Insurance

• Accommodation (tents) and food for the duration of the programme
• Supervision from a qualified leadership team including Adventure Leaders, Youth Leaders and a Doctor
• Provision for the training and orientation phase including expedition safety, first aid and navigation.
• Use of equipment necessary for the completion of the expedition including tents, cooking equipment, sleeping bags, compasses and navigation equipment and safety equipment as necessary
• Waterproof trousers, waterproof jacket, fleece, walk boots and socks and large rucksack for the UK Expedition and Overseas Expedition
• Flights and coach travel within Finland

What is not provided?

• You will have to apply for/renew your passport where necessary; costs relating to this are not covered by the programme

• In most cases, you will be expected to make your own way to designated meeting points (coach stops) at the start of each expedition. The costs associated with travel to meeting points will not be covered by the programme
• Transport to the airport on the day of departure from the UK
• Spending money – there will be little opportunity to spend money in Finland, however you should be aware that on the few occasions they may have access to local shops, any purchases made will be at your own expense
• Personal kit except what is outlined in the What is provided section of this page
