EP.1 - Why adventure matters today (feat. Martin Houghton-Brown)

By British Exploring Society,

In the first episode of The Basecamp Broadcast…

Honor Wilson-Fletcher, British Exploring Society CEO, and Martin Houghton-Brown, Secretary General of The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Foundation, discuss why charitable organisations working with young people (and those young people) face a range of challenges. They consider what we can do to ensure the long-lasting benefits of challenging adventure are available to all, with Martin bringing an invaluable, uniquely international perspective.

About our guest

Martin is the Secretary General of the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award foundation, having previously served at St John Ambulance where he had been Chief Executive since January 2018. He has a strong track record of giving people – especially young people – the chance to fulfil their potential through volunteering, education and training. He was responsible for leading the volunteer vaccination effort for England, introducing the national NHS Cadet programme and pioneering work with young people at risk of street violence. He has also overseen the rise of St John’s cadets taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award from 30 participants a year in 2018 to over 700 in 2023.

Prior to St John’s, Martin was Chief Executive of Depaul UK, which works with homeless young people sleeping rough on the streets, where he grew the charity’s work, especially its ground-breaking Nightstop service. While at the charity Missing People, he successfully campaigned for a new missing person’s law and launched the new national telephone number for missing people. He has also held roles at the Children’s Society and served as Chair of the Board of YMCA England & Wales.

In case you’re new to us…

British Exploring Society is the original youth expedition charity.

We were founded in 1932 by Surgeon Commander George Murray Levick RN after his experience surviving Captain Scott’s Terra Nova expedition to Antarctica from 1910-1912.

A lot has changed in the world since 1932. However, the basic concept first advocated by our founder remains at the core of what we do today.

90 years on, we continue to deliver expeditions, adventures and online programmes in the UK and overseas.

We’re empowering and equipping young people with the confidence, strength, and determination to make the most of their futures.

As a charity, our vision is for all young people to be able to contribute confidently in the world. We want equal access to challenging learning and adventure in the wilderness as an unbeatable preparation for adult life.
